<image:caption>Pastor Britt of Rolling Fork First Baptist Church has been our main Project Partner here. Pastor Britt works alongside a long term recovery group and helps run Rolling Fork Build Back Better, a local nonprofit committed to working with home renters who lost their homes during the Tornado and storm, to have the opportunity to purchase a newly built home at a much reduced rate. Many Survivors are still without permanent housing and have been living in hotels across the state. Pastor Britt's close relationship with many families in the community is appreciated and really helps our service work here by connecting us with Survivors.</image:caption>

<image:title>Environmental Stewardship - Habitat Restoration</image:title>
<image:caption>ERT members engage in many different types of habitat restoration, though the primary type is dolomite glade restoration. Glades in Missouri are dry, thin-soiled ecosystems similar to tall-grass prairies. These glades are home to many unique and rare species; however, fire suppression and lack of care have encouraged the abundant spread of native but harmful red cedars to Missouri glades. Members often spend time in these beautiful areas removing cedar trees to promote the open canopy needed for glade health. Other habitat restoration projects include environmental and wildlife surveying; brush removal and chipping; seeding and planting; and dam restoration.</image:caption>

<image:title>Environmental Stewardship - Invasive Species Removal</image:title>
<image:caption>The introduction of non-native invasive species to already-established ecosystems is detrimental to the local habitat. Invasive species out-compete wild plants and alter the ecosystems. These plants often spread aggressively and can have major impacts on an environment, affecting wild game, native species, and agriculture. We partner with nonprofits and governmental agencies to eradicate and reduce the spread of these damaging plants.</image:caption>

<image:title>Environmental Stewardship - Recreation & Construction</image:title>
<image:caption>State parks, national forests, and other recreation areas have many maintenance needs that require constant upkeep; by engaging in these types of projects we ensure that these sites remain safe, functional, and attractive for future users. Our recreation and construction projects include: trail building and maintenance; sign, kiosk, bulletin board installation; bridge, turnpike, and puncheon construction; firewood generation; painting and graffiti removal; fence construction and demolition, facility maintenance; historic building preservation; gate construction; and picnic table and bear box installation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Environmental Stewardship - Special Project: Montana</image:title>
<image:caption>While the majority of our service year is spent in Missouri and Illinois, AmeriCorps St. Louis holds a 20+ year tradition of serving for about a month or so each year in Montana’s Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. This tradition came about due to the fact that summers in Missouri are extremely hot and humid, making for difficult outdoor service. So, each summer (and in past years during the fall) we travel to Butte, Montana to serve on a variety of conservation and recreation projects with the U.S. Forest Service. These projects can include trail building and maintenance; kiosk, bulletin board installation; bridge, turnpike, and puncheon construction; firewood generation; invasive species and noxious weed treatment and removal, hazard tree removal, fence construction and demolition, facility maintenance; historic building preservation; gate construction; and picnic table and bear box installation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Environmental Stewardship - Special Project: Greenwood Cemetery</image:title>
<image:caption>Located in North St. Louis County, Greenwood Cemetery was founded in 1874 as the first commercial, non-sectarian cemetery for African Americans in the St. Louis metropolitan area. More than 50,000 people are buried within Greenwood’s 32 acres. After the final burial in 1993, the cemetery was no longer maintained. Natural growth took over as the property management ceased, with invasive plants covering burial plots and grapevine choking the historic native trees. In 2016, the Greenwood Cemetery Preservation Association (GCPA) recovered the site and has since made considerable improvements, reclaiming roughly 12 acres with the help of a core group of dedicated volunteers. In 2022, ACSTL spearheaded a formal project to support the GCPA staff with their goals of restoration and historical documentation. With funding from the Missouri Department of Conservation, ACSTL partnered with AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) to support the removal of invasives, restore a native ecosystem, and protect a valuable urban green space. Since then, we have hosted a second round of NCCC to continue supporting these efforts. Learn more about this project HERE.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wildland Fire - Fireline Preparation</image:title>
<image:caption>A fire line is a containment or control line that is either scraped or dug to mineral soil. For prescribed/controlled burns, fire lines are constructed around the perimeter of the burn unit in order to ensure that a burn does not spread further than intended. Fire lines are prepared by solidifying a marked line clear of brush and debris by using chainsaws to remove hazard trees and logs, backpack blowers to remove leaves, or other hand tools to clear the line. By preparing safe fire lines, we ensure the protection of critical natural habitats and public infrastructure as well as the safety of those performing the prescribed burn. AmeriCorps Members spend several weeks during the fall season helping prepare these burn units, so that they are ready for Missouri’s winter/early spring fire season.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wildland Fire - Prescribed Burning</image:title>
<image:caption>A core component of our conservation efforts throughout the year involve prescribed burning. When the weather permits, Members assist partnering agencies with prescribed burns to help restore natural habitats, eradicate invasive species, and manage the forest health. On prescribed burns, Members assist with ignition, line holding, and mop up. In our region, prescribed burns typically take place between February - April. During our most recent prescribed burn season, Members assisted with burning over 22,000 acres across Missouri and Southern Illinois.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wildland Fire - Wildland Firefighting</image:title>
<image:caption>During peak fire season, when government agencies and rural fire departments with limited resources are overburdened with fire response, ERT Members offer the needed labor and expertise to protect land and homes in Missouri and Illinois. Members utilize fire rakes, pulaskis, McLeods, leaf blowers, and other hand tools to help mitigate the spread of a wildfire. Members also take part in scouting for wildfires by patrolling fire towers throughout rural areas. While our region does not experience the large wildfire seen out in western states- dry conditions, low humidity and strong winds can still combine to create dangerous wildfire conditions. Wildfires in our region are also often started by arson, or prescribed burns that escape their containment lines.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wildland Fire - Pile Burning</image:title>
<image:caption>Pile burning, or burn pile construction, is another method to safely control and monitor the disposal of excess vegetation that is removed during fire line construction or habitat restoration projects. Glade restoration projects (where Eastern Red Cedar trees are removed to improve the habitat) and burn piles often go hand in hand. These are also great projects to help stay warm during the cold winter months!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Since 1994, ACSTL has assisted communities in 35 states and over 60 of Missouri’s 105 counties to meet disaster related needs. These missions have included responses to large incidents such as the COVID-19 pandemic and Superstorm Sandy to assisting small rural communities with limited resources. Over the years, the ERT has responded to wildfires throughout the West, Rocky Mountain and Great Lake states; flooding and tornadoes throughout the heartland; numerous hurricanes in the Atlantic and Gulf states; and ice storms in the Northeast, Midwest, and Plains.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ann - Executive Director she/her ann@americorps-stl.org</image:title>
<image:caption>Ann joins ACSTL with 20+ years of experience in nonprofit leadership and operations management in the St. Louis region. Often found in those “jack of all trades” roles in growing nonprofits, she has maintained responsibility for diverse areas of operation including HR, finance, strategic planning, board engagement, and volunteer / event management. After completing a Master’s degree in public administration with a concentration in nonprofit management, Ann remained at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville working with a team which provided technical assistance to area nonprofits – an opportunity which provided significant insight into the challenges that these organizations faced, as well as best practices to overcome common pitfalls. Inspired by this experience, she sought out roles positioned to expand capacity and efficiency through opportunities calling for an initiator’s energy. Ann is most proud of her work at the Waldorf School of St. Louis where she led the transition from a founder-led organization, formalizing an administrative team responsible for critical recruitment and fundraising initiatives. During her tenure as the School Director, the school reached new enrollment and revenue levels, updated its name and identity, and expanded to a second campus. Having seen the impact of its services through her tenure as its Director of Administration, Ann also remains a loyal supporter of the Delta Gamma Center for Children with Visual Impairments. Through her past leadership of the organization’s time-honored annual Christmas tree lot fundraiser, she did obtain rudimentary chainsaw training which she hopes may continue someday at ACSTL. Known to be extremely detail-oriented and analytical, Ann enjoys working with finances, databases, and operations management. When not exploring a new software tool, she spends her free time outside gardening and hiking. Ann and her husband Tom are decorated homebrewers and can often be found at St. Louis’ many amazing breweries and local beer festivals. Her daughter is headed off to college this year and will be sure to hear all about how a service term with ACSTL could be part of her story!</image:caption>

<image:caption>She/her/hers Operations Manager tabatha@americorps-stl.org Tabatha is originally from Long Island, NY, but has spent the last several years in the midwest region. As a new resident of the greater St. Louis area, she is excited to build connections, learn about the city, and live through a part of her mission: to grow where she is planted. Her transition in March 2022 from a 14-year, operations leadership career in the corporate world was brought on by a diagnosis of MS. She shares: "I quickly realized the physical impact of this condition was going to require me to be at my best mentally. For that to happen, I had to grow through experiences with intention.” For the following year, she did just that -- spending time with family throughout the east coast and traveling for 3 months to Oahu, Hawaii, soaking in the culture while visiting her sibling and amazing nieces. Finding AmeriCorps St. Louis and moving into nonprofit operations was a natural next step: “Joining ACSTL is a purposeful continuation of my growth. I’m thrilled the intention is mutual.” Tabatha has developed in the business administration field through work and university partnerships. She’s completed courses such as accounting (1&2), marketing, statistics, organizational leadership and effectiveness, finance, business management, and management of systems. She intends to continue her professional studies and recently received certifications in data analytics and genealogy as a part of a passion project. Currently, she is focused on getting back to sports and joining a local tennis and softball community.</image:caption>

<image:title>Julia - she/her/hers Member Development Coordinator julia@americorps-st.org</image:title>
<image:caption>Julia grew up moving all around the country but has lived in St. Louis for a combined 9 years. She studied Social Work at St. Charles Community College and is currently working towards her BSW. She has a passion for helping and advocating for others and loves walking with our current members as they find their own passions through serving. Julia learned about AmeriCorps through her husband, Emil, who served with AmeriCorps St. Louis from 2019-2021 while they were dating. She developed an appreciation for ACSTL watching her friends serve and is so happy to be a part of this team herself now!
