Remembering Joplin

Over a year ago the Joplin F-5  tornado touched down destroying over 7,500 homes and taking the lives of 161 individuals.  Within hours, the AmeriCorps St. Louis Emergency Response Team (ERT) was in route to Joplin.  By daybreak they established a missing persons hotline and a systems for donation and volunteer management. Today, over a year since the devastating tornado struck, AmeriCorps members are still in Joplin, were they will remain as long as there is a need.  Since May 22nd, 2011 the AmeriCorps Recovery Center (ARC) has documented over 75,000 volunteers for a total of over 500,000 volunteer hours.  These numbers contribute to a cost savings of over 17.5 million dollars for the City.  In addition, the ARC has provided free recovery assistance to over 2,000 homeowners throughout both Joplin and Duquense.
