“I am originally from Joplin and have lived for the past 25 years in Tallahassee Florida. I have many family and friends who still live in the Joplin area. After the tornado I knew I would be coming up to help. I contacted the church I was raised in from Joplin, the diocese in Kansas City, my local Red Cross and a private non-profit in KC, Missouri and got no leads about how I could volunteer in Joplin. Your forms were on-line, your calendar of volunteer activities were online, when I called the numbers listed you answered. You had buses set up to go to the work sites, you had team leaders who knew what they were doing, you had water and food for all volunteers. I have 35 years of volunteering in the community under my belt and I have never worked with a more professional group of organizers as I did with those from AmeriCorps in Joplin. “I am sure there is always room for improvement in any organization,but our church worked with AmeriCorps in both June and again in July and we have no complaints or fantastic ideas on how to accomplish what you did. To see almost complete devastation in the beginning of June and by the end of July some rebuilding starting to take place is amazing. I am hearing the clean-up is complete at this time and think you have used a bunch of unskilled but willing nobodies from all over the country and did what most governmental agencies can’t accomplish in years.
